Essential Listening: My top 5+ Death Metal bands

Hey Metalheads. Well I have been away for the week soakin’ it up down on the Cape. During my many hours of fun in the sun, I started to play a mind game about metal and all the sub genres. What is it to be a death metal band? Are the cookie monster vocals and blast beats obligatory? To tell the truth, I was never able to answer this question with much certainty. I think for a good rule o’ thumb if they have the cookie moster vox, they tune it fairly low and they have the double bass drum, then I can call em Death Metal.

I went through my library and started making a list of my favorite Death Metal bands. So here they are:

Cynic
Definitely technical. Definitely progressive. I can think of no other death metal band that fused elements of jazz, metal, and weird electronic shit better than Cynic. The whole album is rife with interesting guitar work previously unknown prior to Focus. My favorite tracks are the How Could I & Uroboric Forms. I never tire of listening to their sole album. If you like these guys, you might also like Gordian Knot, Spiral Architect, Aghora, and Athiest.

Death
Another technical and progressive death metal band. Every album gets better and progressively technical. What is especially appealing about these guys is that A) you can generally understand what the hell they are singing about and B) the subject matter ofttimes deals with the transcendental nature of the soul and human spirit. Then again there are plenty of tunes about anger and messing with people (wow, I really went all out there with that description). Another differentiating aspect is that though there are plenty of blast beats and typical death metal sections in their songs, there are also many non-death-metal riffs that blend perfectly with the genre. I strongly suggest listening to the albums Symbolic and Human.

Suffocation
Not so technical. These guys are just what I consider good death metal. Not too many blast beats, great subject matter and great guitar work. My only issue with these guys is the poor mixes on their albums. There isn’t a lot of consistency with the quality. Older albums sound better than newer ones. Hopefully they will re-release some of the poorer sounding albums. My favorite album: Pierced from Within.

Necrophagist
Highly technical and progressive. Though I have only heard about these guys within the last year, they are quickly in my top 5. Never I have I heard such agility being performed on the guitar within this genre. Better yet is that every song is unique and captivating. Another great thing is that they explore the whole range of the guitar. Its not always low, chugging riffs. There are plenty of dual arpeggios and heavy, low chugger riffs. My only complaint is that for all of the great riffs in laced in EVERY song, they are ofttimes too short. They never really groove for any length of time on one particular riff. My favorite songs are The Stillborn One and Only Ashes Remain.

Opeth
Another highly technical and progressive band. What I love about these guys is that they are beyond one genre of music. I still consider them a technical death metal band in that they have the typical death metal vocals (most of the time) and that they are super heavy when they want to be. I also like how they incorporate classical elements and they can convey a mood (that’s not associated with death metal) which most bands fail to do. There are a few songs I bore easily by listening to. But for the most part these guys are top notch. Favorite songs are Demon of the Fall and The Grand Conjuration.

Honorable Mentions

  • Carcass
  • Dying Fetus
  • Spawn of Possession
  • Krisiun
  • Beneath the Massacre
  • Aborted
  • Nile

  1. off the top of my head, here goes my top 5 death metal bands, in no particular order (actually, this is death metal we’re talking about, so I should re-phrase that to say, off the top of my [chopped up] head, or something to that effect)…

    - Pestilence: death metal from Holland, CONSUMING IMPULSE is my favorite, but for those of you into the more technical side, listen to TESTIMONY OF THE ANCIENTS – technical death metal with a light jazz influence
    - Death: Chuck rules, SCREAM BLOODY GORE is my favorite, but again, for those more into technique, go for one of their later albums – THE SOUND OF PERSEVERANCE anyone?
    - Obituary: Sludgy, slow, grinding death metal. I loved these guys even before I was a death metal fan. The artwork for SLOWLY WE ROT is one of my favorites and definitely drew me towards this band. Favorite song – Chopped In Half
    - Carcass: Are they death metal or are they grindcore? Do I give a fuck? No. They are just a great band that fall within the death metal realm. These guys were doing the melodic death thing way before the guys in Sweden picked up on it. Absolute best – NECROTICISM: DESCANTING THE INSALUBRIOUS…known for their use of medical terminology.
    - Poison: LOOK WHAT THE CAT DRAGGED IN is a death metal masterpiece …just checking to see if you’re still awake…

  2. for a moment, reading this was going smoothly until I saw Poisen. Yes I took a double take.

I also have to say that tho Carcass didn’t make my top 5 they were #6. I also like how they got away from medical lyrics and more into the f* the world type stuff. I guess I love red meat, I really don’t want to hear about a human going through the whole meat grinder thing. But then again I can’t understand the shit they say most of the time so who cares!!!!

I will have to check out some of these other albums and bands. Haven’t heard Obit in awhile.

  3. One more I just thought of…

Atheist – I recommend UNQUESTIONABLE PRESENCE – great technical death metal from Florida

  4. check out tangled in ruin on myspace for the best new death metal band

  5. well. I agree Opeth should be up in the top 3, if not top 1, but have you listened to their album Still Life? I don’t get why a lot of people love BP so much. I mean it is awesome, but a little below what Still Life is. Demon of the Fall and Grand Conjuration are the worst Opeth songs in my opinion, if any. Demon is actually OK, but overrated by a lot!! It still is super low compared to all the other songs though.

  6. To tell the truth I haven’t even listened to that album. I got my incomplete Opeth collection from a friend. I hadn’t even thought to check for other albums (like a dope).

I will certainly give it a listen as I am downloading it from iTunes as I write this. However to say that Grand Conjuration or Demon of the Fall are the worst songs is quite a surprise. I think there are plenty of shitty Opeth tunes (and that’s what landed them last in my top 5). I shouldn’t say shitty but rather they are boring to me.

I guess coming from a technical/progressive background that is why those tunes appeal to me. If you are coming from a black metal background, then I can see why they wouldn’t.

    To each their own…

  7. really liked ur list n opinions…but can u do me a favor as a musiclover?…can u name a few good progressive death metal bands..???that wud be very grateful of u if u do… :)

  8. Glad you liked the read. Regarding the term/genre progressive death metal bands, it is somewhat hard for me to discern between a progressive death metal band and a technical death metal band. In all honesty I would say they are the same sub genre within the death metal genre. So with that being said, I would suggest the following bands (some may be repeated from the above list):

    Cynic
    Aghora
    Athiest
    Death
    Control Denied
    Into Enternity
    Necrophagist
    Beneath the Massacre
    Psycroptic
    Spawn of possession
    the list goes on…

Hope that helps. Fellow bloggers please suggest the ones I missed.

    Up the Irons!!!

  9. Hey 10 years of Opeth. I bought Still Life and it is indeed a great album. I can’t believe I missed out on it. But I stand firm in my evaluation of Grand Conjuration and Demon of the Fall being great tunes. Maybe over time tho.

    Up the Irons!!!

  10. the only one that I would add to the recommended progressive death metal bands is Pestilence…

This is one of those bands I just keep going back to, no matter what I’m currently into.

With Pestilence, you gotta focus on the later records if you’re interested in “progressive”, go for TESTIMONY OF THE ANCIENTS or SPHERES

  11. Great! Tell me if it does xD. EVERY song on there should be kickass.
Tell me if there is one or some that you dont really like. According to wiki, it’s their most technical album, not like it matters that much to me. I don’t really listen to black metal though. I heard of a couple of songs, but I’m busy with other music. I listen to the more well known bands on your list. Cynic, Atheist, Death, Necrophagist. Right now im looking into game/anime music. Check out this link of a guitar anime song. It’s acoustic and it might remind you a bit of Opeth’s stuff. It probably won’t be as good to yo as it is to me, because you don’t watch the anime. But still, listen to it. http://tamami.imeem.com/music/ok3918eU/guitar/
