Myspace Band Review: Alestorm/Asmegin
Just as a heads up, Alestorm/Asmegin isn’t the band name, it’s two separate bands.
Anyway, we’ll start with Alestorm.

Well, look at that picture. What’s it all about? Is it just some silly gimmick? NO! Alestorm is a SCOTTISH PIRATE METAL band, and i must say they are sick. The music is pretty heavy, and actually does a good job in (and i can’t believe I’m saying this, but…) setting a pirate mood. And the best part is, the guy actually sings like a pirate.
The Good:
-Good vocals and instrumentals.
-Really really fun to listen to.
The Bad:
- The concept is still pretty dumb.
Rating: 3/5 doubloons

Next up we have Asmegin.

Now, these guys are absolutley brutal. Here and there, they are musicaly similar to Alestorm, but replace Alestorms singer with the singer from Skeletonwitch and make him sing even heavier. Ya, badass. These guys are Norwegian folk metal and “viking metal”. Don’t really know what viking metal would be, but if it’s actually anything like this then I would say it’s fucking sick.
The Good:
- Insaneley heavy vocals and guitars and drums and the like.
- I’m into the folk kinda stuff. I just think it’s really different.
- If you look in the “band members” section of their myspace, you will see the sentence “Marius Olaussen – Guitar & Accordion”. Not only does that guy have a badass name, but he’s a guitar-accordion player.
The Bad:
- I don’t like the fact that i can not pronounce any of their song titles.
-The second song on their playlist, i strongly dislike when the random opera chick starts singing.
-The random baby noises in the last song annoy me a little.

Wow! Just when I thought all the musical gimmicks had been exhausted, you find Pirate Metal. Now I am a big fan of Robert Louis Stephenson who wrote some of my childhood favorites like “Treasure Island” & “Kidnapped” so I love the whole pirate theme.
Alestorm, simply put, doesn’t do it for me not even on the pirate thing. I don’t really like gimmicky shit in the first place and this is too reminiscent of the Drop Kick Murphys and the whole Irish Bar Singing shit I can’t stand. I guess too many nights hanging at the Baggot Inn or Blackthorn in good ol’ Southie will do that to you. The music is pretty cool, the lyrics are kinda cool, the singing sucks ass. YARRRRR!!!!
One thing I do have to say is that their Capt. Morgan metal shirt is awesome. I might have to get one. Love the design.
I haven’t given a listen to the other band but will report back in a bit. Great finds so far tho.
oh, you gotta check out asmegin. Fucking heavy.
I have to echo jwopitz’s take on this – and I love just about anything heavy, that has to do with the sea. I will say this, Wenches and Mead has to be one of the better song titles I have seen.
I think Mastadon’s Blood & Thunder or Maiden’s Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner are the ultimate sea-faring lyrics. You can shove pirate & viking metal up your arses when compared to these two monuments to “sea-faring metal”. YO HO HO AND A BOTTLE OF RUM!!!! YAR!
I do like me some Blood and Thunder.
I don’t really think viking metal is supposed to be associated with the sea, more the scandonavian warriors burning towns….Raping the women and wasting the men…
(hey if I have the oppurtunity to make a maiden refference i’m going to take it). Basicaly, vikings are possibaly the most metal types of people to ever exist, and i think that is why they would call a devistatingly brutal metal “Viking Metal”.
Interesting… I always think of Vikings plundering unsuspecting sea-side towns, riding in on huge ships. Immigrant Song-style. Leviathan, from beginning to end, is the most complete tale of the sea, set to metal. Mastodon has a few older sea-faring metal tunes (Battle at Sea & Ol’ Nessie, come to mind) that are outstanding.
The Decemberists, a very not-metal band, has some stunning songs of pirates, sea-whores and desperate men a-plenty, seeking revenge on the high seas. YARRRR!!! Shiver me timbers!
well, this is true as well, vikings are sea dwellers. But they are also cold-blooded killing machines
