Delayed review of Death Magnetic
Death Magnetic:
-A CD made by “New” Metallica
-Does not involve Cliff Burton in any way.
Sounds like something I would generally HATE.
But I don’t.
In fact, I like Death Magnetic a lot. The lyrics suck, and James’ voice takes a while to get used to, but Lars plays again, as does Kirk…and they play good. It’s generally heavy and respectable, especially when you compare it to the last three shit festivals.

Hasnt left my CD player since it came out. I’m really digging it. They’re never going to be the band that they were in the Kill / Ride / Puppets era but this comes pretty damn close. Easily their best CD since And Justice (ignoring the Black Album since that really stands on its own). I just picked up tix for their show in Jan. I’m really looking forward to hearing this shit live.
My two favorite tracks – My Apocalypse and Broken, Beat and Scarred.
When I first heard this, Horrorbiz was testing me. He popped this in and said check out this solo. I did, and immediately said something like, “wow that sounds kinda like Kirk Hammet’s old shit”. I was right. While I dig the overall sound of the few tunes I heard, I still heard a bunch of the “ear candy” crap that has been the Metallica Benchmark for the last 4 or 5 albums. Its good riffs and good playing but something is not right.
I seriously think the two douche bags (Hetfield and Ulrich) sit in a room with a producer and try to think of any and all the ways they can pull all the punches. Its like baby Lars doesn’t get heard enough with all his stupid yapping that he has to OVERPLAY the drums. “Here, let’s do this for 8 measures and then I will do that really cool thing here for a few, AND THEN, james? James? JAMES check this out I will do the super drum roll and we blast into that breakdown and you can be all cool and brooding with your Cowardly Lion pose will doing the chugging power chords for 16, that’s RIGHT FREAKING 16 measures!!!!!”
I absolutely hate Hetfield. His lyrics suck and style of singing has become a lesson on emphasizing the wrong sy-LAB-le. Let’s see how many times I can swing that up tempo shit on every other word.
Douchbags! I hate this band. The spirit of this band died with Cliff Burton and Mustaine. I won’t buy this or any other album of theirs ever again.

Horrobiz lives. He, Sweatloaf and I went to Opeth a week or so back. Had a blast.
None of us have been inspired to write a single thing. I would like to, but I haven’t discovered anything that tickles my fancy. Plus sitting at a computer all day for work really destroys my desire to sit there, unpaid, and write something, regardless if its about something I love.
